People suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may improve your condition without medical treatment, due to the unique innovative therapy that is being tested at the University Hospital Hospital Vall d'Hebron (HUVH) in Barcelona. Psychiatric Department of the clinic has begun to explore the positive impact of virtual reality in the treatment of this disease that affects 5% of children and continuing in more than half of the patients in adulthood. The new technique allows professionals to use hyper-realistic environment to help patients focus.
The first test involved 90 adults who have to go through six 20-minute sessions. With the new method, it is planned to rid patients of this disorder without the use of drugs.
Head of the Department of Psychiatry HUVH Josep Antoni Ramos-Quiroga said that the combination of virtual reality to the procedure of concentration and awareness, based on the eponymous concept of Buddhist meditation has been used successfully in the treatment of individual patients. According to him, the goal is to reduce the treatment time and getting the same results as with medication.
The project, launched in September, is also involved Karolinska Institute (Sweden). The initiative is Mobile Word Capital Barcelona award for technological innovation.
